corruption
Oil in Nigeria has spawned numerous issues over the years but one that has effected the very lives of the people is the violence. Over the years, the people of Nigeria have protested drilling for oil over the years and in response oil companies have been accused of turning to a corrupt government and doing everything they can to manipulate it in their benifet, by any means. One such event was against the Ijaw tribe in 1999, 100 troops from a Chevron facility attacked two Ijaw communities killing four people in total including the leader of one community and a 7 year old girl, along with 62 missing after the attacks, the troops also set the villages ablaze, killed the livestock, and destroyed all fishing equipment. Another example was when activist Ken Saro-Wiwa was wrongfully accused, tried, and executed by the regime of General Sani Abacha. Saro-Wiwa's family filed a law suit against the Shell company which they accused of conspiring with the government to stage Saro-Wiwa's arrest and execution.
